Located on Covent Garden's Southampton Street, Abuelo is an Australian-meets-South-American coffee house and kitchen serving light, fresh, produce-led meals in-house or take away from 8am 'til late, and a variety of single origin speciality coffees.
The coffee is bought directly from the farmers who use ethical trade practices that help support the local people and areas. Combining South American beans with an Australian coffee technique provides a truly special Aussie coffee experience in the heart of London.
Abuelo’s modern menu is designed to respect and reflect the owner’s Australian and Argentinian heritage, as well as a variety of diets. Featuring fresh, organic, uncomplicated food with plenty to offer the discerning meat-lover, Abuelo’s menu particularly shines with its more veggie friendly options. Whether it’s the honey whipped mascarpone on sourdough, fresh figs & crushed pistachios or the truffle mushroom toastie, some of the best vegetarian and vegan snacks in Covent Garden can be found right here as the perfect accompaniment to a delicious coffee.
The restaurant's journey began in 1987 with five of Sydney and Melbourne's best cafes and restaurants, Zigolini’s and Trazini’s, which were part of the early development of coffee and food culture of Australia. As part of the beginning of what became Australia’s now world famous 'coffee culture', the team created a number of coffee staples, such as the ‘Babyccino’ – which quickly spread all over the world after a feature in Vogue.
The name 'Abuelo' was inspired by Alberto de la Vega, the father/grandfather of the owners. Alberto hand crafted timber joinery for the first Zigolini’s restaurant in Sydney, which remained on that site for over 20 years. In honour of this, for Abuelo Covent Garden, Alberto’s son Alejandro has handcrafted unique timber joinery from Australian New South Wales Spotted Gum. The timber interior creates a relaxing, calm and warm space to take a break from the craziness of city life. Most days, Annie (the resident big fluffy Golden Doodle), will be there to greet you!
